Nanjing University Hosts Third Session of National Language Commission’s Advanced Training Course

On July 29, 2024, the National Language Commission’s Advanced Training Course on Language and Script Research (third session) opened at Nanjing University, hosted by the Language and Script Information Management Department of the Ministry of Education and co-organized by the School of Literature of Nanjing University and the Center for Chinese Language Strategy Research.

This training course lasts for 15 days and is positioned as a small-scale, high-level, in-depth learning course. The 22 trainees are composed of young and middle-aged academic backbones engaged in interdisciplinary research. More than 30 well-known experts in linguistics, regional countries, information security and other related fields at home and abroad have been invited to give lectures to help trainees expand their research horizons and grasp the strategic resource attributes of language and characters under the new situation, enhance their theoretical and practical capabilities in interdisciplinary collaborative innovation, language technology and industry research, security and development services, decision-making consulting research, etc., cultivate and strengthen a team of high-level language research experts with professional qualities, patriotism, and global vision, and serve the construction of a strong country in education, science and technology, and culture.

Liu Peijun, Director of the Language and Information Management Department of the Ministry of Education, Chen Yunsong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing University and Director of the China Language Strategy Research Center, Li Qiang, Director of the Planning and Coordination Division of the Language and Information Management Department of the Ministry of Education, Dong Xiao, Dean of the School of Literature of Nanjing University, Chen Xinren, Professor of Nanjing University and Executive Director of the China Language Strategy Research Center, Ge Yanhong, Assistant to the Dean of the School of Literature of Nanjing University and Deputy Director of the China Language Strategy Research Center, Fang Xiaobing, Professor of Nanjing University and Deputy Director of the China Language Strategy Research Center, and others attended the opening ceremony.

At the opening ceremony, Chen Yunsong introduced the history of Nanjing University over the past 122 years, the School of Arts over the past 110 years, and the development achievements of the Chinese Language Strategy Research Center over the past 17 years. He thanked the Ministry of Education and the National Language Commission for their concern and support for Nanjing University’s talent training, scientific research, and language strategy research.

During the discussion with the trainees and the school survey, Liu Peijun and his delegation introduced the achievements of the national language and writing industry, analyzed the opportunities and challenges facing the current high-quality development of language and writing, and studied the work measures for language to serve economic and social development. It is hoped that the trainees will take serving the national strategy as their goal, strengthen their mission, actively collaborate and innovate, and make new contributions. It is hoped that the center will build on its existing achievements to better serve the national strategy, actively explore in the fields of language economy, language security, language civilization and “digital Chinese”, and strive to build a theoretical system for Chinese language strategy research.

During the investigation, everyone unanimously affirmed that Nanjing University has fully utilized the educational function of language and characters, opened a public course on the beauty of Chinese characters, and carried out educational projects on language and character themes such as stereotype printing, handmade papermaking, book production, and ancient book restoration for students based on the school library. They believed that it embodies the integration of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education, and effectively guides students to improve their language and cultural literacy, enhance their cultural confidence, and inherit the excellent traditional Chinese culture.
