National Chemistry Week at AMU

 

Aligarh : A panel of faculty members, researchers and students got together to discuss ways chemists can take their careers to the next level in the online ‘National Chemistry Week’ observations of the American Chemical Society International Students Chapter (ACS ISC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Training and Placement Office—General of the university.

“As a community-based program of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the National Chemistry Week unites ACS local sections and international student chapters, technical divisions, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry to our quality of life”, said Dr Mohammad Zain Khan (Faculty Advisor, ACS ISC AMU) in the keynote address.

He pointed out that ACS ISC AMU has received the ‘Honorable Mention’ in Best Chapter Awards by American Chemical Society for the year 2020-21.

“American Chemical Society is improving the world through the transforming power of chemistry—by advancing the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people”, said Dr Kurt Headrick (Career Consultant at ACS).

He was the Guest Speaker of the programme.

Sharing his professional experiences, Dr Kurt spoke on ‘Career Management for Chemists’.

He gave ample guidance on building resumes, staying driven and current and personal skills and traits.

Dr Kurt also received an online memento from Dr Mohamad Zain Khan.

Presiding over the inaugural function, Prof Mohammad Ashraf (Dean, Faculty of Science) said that the students engaging in online scientific activities should be encouraged as these events are truly a blessing during the pandemic.

Dr Syed Masarrat Ali (Director, Albireo Pharma Inc., Boston USA) pointed out that an efficient networking is the key to success and India is catching up with the United States in the prospects of career management in Chemistry and other fields.

Mohammad Abubakar Khan (Secretary, ACS ISC, AMU) delivered a brief talk on the vision of AMU founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and his work in science education and women education.

Walid Heiba (ACS Alexandria University Student Chapter, Egypt) gave a presentation on the achievements of ACS ISC in cultivating a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and respectful community of chemistry professionals.

Saad Hameed (Training and Placement Officer-General) discussed how ACS ISC, AMU is helping students career building and networking.

Dr Shahab A A Nami (Coordinator, ACS ISC, AMU) delivered the welcome address and ArishNaim (President, ACS ISC, AMU) conducted the programme.

Mohammad Rashid (Vice-president, ACS ISC, AMU) extended the vote of thanks.
