Bangalore : BYJU’S, the world’s leading Edtech company, recently conducted a self-defense workshop for girl students aged 12 and above from the Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled in Bangalore. As a run up to National Girl Child Day, celebrated on 24th January, several employees of BYJU’S volunteered alongside professional coaches and trainers to conduct the workshop for over 100 girls, including 20 specially abled ones who were being trained in sign languages by a teacher.

The workshop was a one-day session, covering various moves of self-defense, ranging from bear hug attack, elbow strike, groin kick, hammer strike, escape with hands trapped, escape from side headlock etc. which are essential techniques for every girl to learn. After the session, students were divided into pairs for practicing purposes. The workshop is in line with EFA’s vision to uplift girl students with the right education.

“BYJU’S has always been committed to empowering girl children. The aim of this workshop was to teach them how to stand up for themselves and protect themselves in case of an emergency. I am glad that we were able to organize such an event for the girls and hope that it will help them gain confidence.” said Rama Prashanth, a BYJU’S employee volunteering for the workshop.

Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled is a National Award winning NGO established in the year 1997, working towards the empowerment of persons with disabilities and the underserved through its diverse initiatives focused on providing quality education, accommodation, nutritious food, vocational training and placement based rehabilitation. Today, Samarthanam Trust stands to be a complete solution provider by supporting education and livelihood needs of persons with disabilities and those from underprivileged backgrounds. The organization envisions to touch at least 10,00,000 lives by 2030, providing comprehensive solutions to the disabled and underserved communities.

Shaikh Kulsoom, MMA athlete and Coach said, “I personally feel self-defense has always been a part of our lives and especially quite mandatory for girls in this era. Self-defense shouldn’t be treated as a ‘choice’ but rather as a ‘life skill’. Let’s learn together and grow together.”

“Eve-teasing and harassment in public places or even while using public transportation has been leading to a loss of self-confidence and increased mental imbalances in us and these can be countered with the right self-defense mechanisms in place. I am thankful to BYJU’S and the trainers for conducting this highly beneficial training session.” said a student beneficiary.
