NCAER-IMF Panel Discussion on Regional Economic Outlook for Asia and Pacific
The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) cordially invite you to a panel discussion on the IMF’s latest Regional Economic Outlook for Asia and Pacific. The panel discussion will be held on October 31, 2022 at the Tamarind Hall, India Habitat Centre from 2.30 – 4.00 PM. The event will be preceded by lunch at 1.00 PM. All attendees are cordially invited to join the lunch for informal interaction with Dr Srinivasan and other panellists.
Dr Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the IMF’s Asia Pacific Department, will make a presentation on the latest assessment for the region. He will also discuss broader challenges, including large medium-term output losses and the need to build greater resilience in the region.
The other members of the panel will include: Dr Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India; Dr Rakesh Mohan, President and Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP); Dr Poonam Gupta, Director General, NCAER; and Ms Sonal Varma, Chief Economist (India and Asia ex-Japan), Nomura. The discussion will be moderated by Dr Mridul Saggar, IEPF Chair Professor, NCAER.

Speakers
Krishna Srinivasan is the Director of IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department, overseeing the institution’s work on all countries in the Asia-Pacific region. In previous capacities, Krishna managed the IMF’s work on several systemically important countries, including China, Korea, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Peru. In previous years, he also led the IMF’s work on the G-20 in the context of the global financial crisis and he has been the IMF’s mission chief for the UK and Israel. Krishna is the editor of the IMF book Global Rebalancing: A Roadmap for Economic Recovery and a co-editor of two recent books: Brazil—Boom, Bust and the Road to Recovery; and Unleashing Growth and Strengthening Resilience in the Caribbean. He has a PhD in International Finance from Indiana University and a Master’s from the Delhi School of Economics, and has published several papers both at the IMF and in leading academic journals.
- Anantha Nageswaranis the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India. He has earlier worked at Bank Julius Baer, Credit Suisse and the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS). A graduate from Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, he has taught in leading management institutes in India and Singapore, including at IMFR Graduate School of Business as Dean and at IIMs Bangalore and Indore as Professor, besides at Nanyang Technical University and Singapore Management University. He holds a doctoral degree in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is the co-founder of the Aavishkaar India Micro Venture Capital Fund, a pioneer in impact investing and the Takshashila Institution, a think tank for research and education in public policy. He also served on the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) during 2019-21. He is a prolific writer and has co-authored several books includingThe Rise of Finance: Causes, Consequences and Cures (2019).
Rakesh Mohan is the President and Distinguished Fellow at Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP). He has earlier served as India’s Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund; Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India; Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs; and Chief Economic Adviser, Government of India. He is currently a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM). A PhD from Princeton University, he has also been a Senior Fellow at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and a Professor at Yale University. He has been associated with Stanford University and Brookings India. Dr Mohan has chaired several important government committees that produced influential reports in the area of infrastructure and has co-chaired G20 and BIS Working Groups. Besides, he has authored several books, the latest one being “India Transformed: 25 Years of Economic Reforms”.
Poonam Gupta is the Director General, NCAER and a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM). Before joining NCAER, she has served as Lead Economist, Global Macro and Market Research, International Finance Corporation (IFC); Lead Economist for India at the World Bank; Economist at the IMF; RBI Chair Professor at National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP); Professor at Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER); and an Associate Professor, Delhi School of Economics. Her research has been published in leading scholarly journals and featured in The Economist, Financial Times, and Wall Street Journal. She holds a PhD in International Economics from the University of Maryland, US and a Masters in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.
Sonal Varma is Nomura’s Chief Economist, India and Asia ex-Japan, based in Singapore. She is known for her analysis of key economic trends in the region and publishing in-depth reports on the economy as part of Nomura’s Asia ex-Japan Global Markets Research team. She joined Nomura in October 2008 from Lehman Brothers, where she served as India Economist. She has been highly rated for her India and pan-Asia research over the years and her views are frequently sought by the media and think tanks. Ms Varma previously worked as an Economist at ICICI Bank and rating agency CRISIL. She was a member of the Indian government’s working group to construct the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Delhi University, and a Masters in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics.
Mridul Saggar is the IEPF Chair Professor at NCAER. Prior to joining NCAER, he was Executive Director at RBI and a member of the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee as also of its Financial Markets Committee. He has represented India at various international bodies/G20 and BIS Working Groups/OECD Task Forces. A PhD from IGIDR and a mid-career fellow at Princeton University, he has several research papers and editorial articles in diverse areas of economics. He has also been chief economist for Kotak, India’s biggest investment bank. He has taught and delivered guest lectures at academic institutions in India and abroad. Dr Saggar is also on the expert roster of the International Monetary Fund and has offered short-term consultancy to Fund members in the area of monetary policy and operations.
