Neuroupdate Workshop held

 

Aligarh : The Department of Neurosurgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organised the 2nd AMU Neuroupdate-Endoscopic skull base Cadaveric Workshop, in association with the Department of Anatomy, JNMC and Aligarh Association of Neurosciences under the aegis of Neurological Surgeons’ Society of India.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Naima Khatoon inaugurated the neuroupdate. She said the Department of Neurosurgery has progressed considerably since its inception in 2012 despite limited funds, and caters to a huge population in western part of the state. She lauded the collaboration with the Department of Anatomy in the pursuit for medical excellence.

Eminent national faculties, including Prof. Awadesh Jaiswal (HOD Neurosurgery, SGPGI, Lucknow), Dr. Amit Keshri (SGPGI, Lucknow), Dr. Anil Sharma (AIIMS, Raipur) and Dr. Keshav Bhangale (Medanta, Gurugram) attended the cadaveric workshop.

They showcased master demonstrations on cadavers on Endoscopic skull base approaches for different brain tumors, through minimally invasive ways.

Dr. Amit Keshri demonstrated the nasal part of the dissection, while Prof. Awadesh Jaiswal demonstrated extended endoscopic approaches to reach different parts of the brain though the nose in minimal invasive way.

Discussions on different endoscopic approaches, anatomy and complications were carried by Dr. Anil Sharma, who also discussed on management of pituitary tumors. Dr. Deepak Bhangale elaborated on how to deal with complications in endoscopic skull base surgery. Prof. Jaiswal showcased and discussed Endoscopic orbital approaches.

Prof. Raman M. Sharma, said the Department of Neurosurgery, JNMC oversees more than 10 thousand patients in OPD and conducts five hundred elective surgeries annually, and is the only Department in Uttar Pradesh performing both endoscopic brain and spine surgeries.

Prof. M. Fakhrul Hoda lauded the efforts of the faculty of Neurosurgery and Anatomy in organising the cadaveric workshop.

Prof. Fazalur Rehman, Department of Anatomy emphasized on collaboration between different departments with Cadaveric Workshop for better learning and teaching experiences and of course patient care.

Dr. Ahmed Ansari, Organising Secretary, Department of Neurosurgery thanked the invited faculty for their insight which enriched discussions on endoscopic approaches.

Dr. M. Tabish Khan said learning through Cadavers is the best module in surgical teaching before operating in patients. It enhances clarity of thought before going into the operating room.

Prof. M. Habib Raza, Dean, Faculty of Medicine emphasized that the Department of Neurosurgery and all surgical super specialties grew out of the Department of Surgery and are doing exceptionally well.

Dr. Sanjeev Sharma, Aligarh Association of Neurosciences applauded the collaborative efforts.

The Cadaveric workshop was attended by neurosurgical residents in training and pass outs. They got an opportunity to learn and discuss the intricacies, anatomy and complications in Endoscopic skull base surgery from the best in the field.
