New Chairman assumes charge at Department of Physics

Aligarh : Prof Mohammad Sajjad Athar has been appointed as the Chairman, Department of Physics, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for a period of three years.

He assumed the charge on November 5, Saturday.

Prof Sajjad Athar is associated with the world renowned Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), United States Department of Energy national laboratory specialising in high-energy particle physics and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. He is also member of the Snowmass Neutrino Collaboration, an international collaboration to bring a White paper on ‘Neutrino Physics’ in the United States; DUNE Collaboration, USA; Neutrino Panel of International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and of an international collaboration of Neutrino Theory-Experiment (NUSTEC) Board.

Prof Sajjad Athar has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals including several papers with Nobel Prize in Physics (2015) recipient, Prof Takaaki Kajita and has co-authored the acclaimed scholastic book, ‘The Physics of Neutrino Interactions (Cambridge University Press, July 2020)’, an advanced text introducing neutrino physics with a theoretical framework for describing relativistic particles.

He has an extensive teaching and research experience extending over 27 years in the university and he has served on several important positions such as Coordinator, Innovation Council and Incubation Center; Coordinator, Selecting AMU Research Scholars for Anveshan: National Student Research Convention and Deputy-Coordinator, Committee for Universities with Potential for Excellence.

Prof Sajjad Athar is also a member of the Academic Programmes Committee and Green Energy Project of the university.
