NEW INITIATIVE: SIR SUNDERLAL HOSPITAL OF BHU BEGINS MINIMALLY INVASIVE CARDIAC SURGERIES
Varanasi : Striving towards making available the best, modern and affordable health services and facilities to the common people, Sir Sunderlal Hospital of Banaras Hindu University has taken another important step in that regard. The hospital has started Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgeries at its Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. The department recently operated a 25 year old female patient through this method. The patient had an Atrial Septal Defect in her heart which was to be operated to enable her to lead a healthy life. Usually such surgeries are done by cutting the sternum (chest bone) which takes a long time to recover and patients experience severe and prolonged pain. Besides, the patients are required to take at least four to six weeks rest or break before resuming their routine activities. The MICS (Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery) method addresses all these issues. A team of surgeons comprising Dr. Arvind Pandey and Dr. Narendra Nath from the CTVS Department treated the patient and carried out the surgical procedure through a small incision on her chest. Prof. R. B. Singh, Dr. Smita and Dr. Shekhar from the Department of Anaesthesia, Perfusionists Dinesh Maiti and Nursing Team members Vikas, Sutapa and Chitaranjan were part of the larger surgical team. The patient is recovering well and will be discharged very soon. The procedure is comparatively less painful than the previously used method. Dr. Arvind Pandey said that the patient will be able to resume her usual routine within 7-10 days of her surgery. He said that carrying out a successful surgery using this method is an important development as Sir Sunderlal Hospital has probably become the only hospital in Varanasi to have this facility. “Our hospital caters to the needs of a large population in this part of the country. Having modern and less complex methods to cure patients is a major boon for the healthcare ecosystem here”, added Dr. Pandey.
It is pertinent to mention that open heart surgeries including CABG, Valve surgeries, Redo open heart surgeries, surgeries for Aorta, Congenital Cardiac Surgeries and Vascular surgeries are done routinely at the Sir Sunderlal Hospital. The department now plans to carry out MICS valve surgery and MICS CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery) very soon.
