“New Perspectives on the Gupta Period in ‘Treasures of the Gupta Empire'”
New Delhi : Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Kalanidhi Division, hosted a book launch and discussion on the book ‘Treasures of the Gupta Empire’ by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar at the Samvet Auditorium, IGNCA, New Delhi. The event was chaired by Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA, with Dr. B.R. Mani, Director General, National Museum, as the Guest of Honour. A distinguished panel of speakers, including Padmshree Prof. K.K. Thapliyal, Dr. Dilip Rajgor, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Manjul, Prof. Ramesh C. Gaur, and Dr. Prashant Kulkarni, shared their insights on the significance of the book and its contribution to the study of Gupta numismatics.
In his address, Shri Sanjeev Kumar introduced the book, emphasizing its importance in revisiting Bharat’s history from the 4th to 6th century Gupta period, based on four decades of research. He stressed the need to rewrite history due to inaccuracies accumulated over time and highlighted the Gupta era as crucial, being the first to codify Hindu iconography. This book meticulously compiles data on conquests, coronations, and other significant events, offering a more accurate portrayal of Bharat’s past. Though a work of passion, it is grounded in rigorous research and hard work.
Prof. Emeritus K.K. Thapliyal extended his congratulations to the author for producing a highly relevant and remarkable publication, noting that this work is the most comprehensive, updated, and illustrative contribution to the study of the Gupta period, surpassing all previous efforts. Referring to the illustrations of the coins, he remarked on their striking realism, highlighting the meticulous attention given to studying their sources. In particular, he praised the photographs and illustrations of Gupta coins, emphasizing their significance in advancing the study of numismatics. He further emphasised the value of the work within the context of numismatic science, stating that it offers a holistic study of coins, with distinct trends emerging throughout the book. Prof. Thapliyal described it as an empirical study, providing a fair and transparent evaluation of the author’s work while allowing readers to form their own judgments. He expressed his appreciation for the author’s interpretations, particularly the clear and distinct comparisons drawn between different periods, which are meticulously detailed and well-presented in the publication.
In his chair remarks, Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi emphasized the Bhartiya tradition of acknowledging contributions, referencing the case of Bhāmatī and Vachaspati Mishra, and suggested the next edition be dedicated to the author’s wife. He noted the relevance of this publication on coinage in today’s digital age, where plastic money dominates, emphasizing the significance of producing a work on coins at a time when the study of numismatics is largely overlooked in academic institutions. Dr. Joshi also mentioned IGNCA’s efforts in preserving cultural heritage, including works like those of Raja Ravi Varma. He remarked that this publication offers valuable insights into civilizational history, economy, and iconography, and will likely influence academic curricula globally.
At the beginning of the program, Prof. Ramesh Chandra Gaur introduced the guests and welcomed them on stage. At the end, Mr. Gopal from the Kala Nidhi Division delivered the vote of thanks. A distinguished group of scholars, historians, and cultural enthusiasts were present at this launch event held at IGNCA.
