Move to Give Unprecedented Opportunities to the Youth of Mumbai and Maharashtra
MUMBAI:
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, yesterday announced the commencement of the process to establish a Skill Development Centre in Mumbai, marking a major step towards creating employment opportunities for the city’s youth. This announcement was made during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).
Speaking on the occasion, Piyush Goyal stated that the new skilling centre in Mumbai will train and skill 1 lakh people, making them ready for jobs.
Piyush Goyal further emphasized that the mission of improving the skill sets of Indian youth is close to the heart of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Centre of Excellence, once completed, aims to provide skill development training to lakhs of youth over the next three years across various sectors. The Centre will be set up in Borivali, with support from the CII, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. While many necessary permissions are still pending, the formal process of establishing the Centre has now officially begun.
Goyal reiterated the importance of this project for the city, stating, “This Skill Development Centre, supported by CII, will provide vocational training and create pathways to employment for the youth of Mumbai and Maharashtra. In time, it has the potential to become a model public-private partnership in India.”
At the signing of the MoU, a job drive was conducted by CII as part of the event, during which offer letters were issued to selected candidates, reinforcing the immediate impact of this initiative on local employment.
The Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has agreed to allocate 50,000 sq. ft. of space for the training center and 20,000 sq. ft. for a hostel. The Centre is expected to be operational within 6-8 months, once the necessary approvals are in place.
The vocational training provided at the Centre will focus on sectors such as hospitality and will also cater to international workforce needs, including training for jobs in countries like Japan, where workforce shortages are prevalent.
