NYU will host “Animals as Legal Beings,” a webinar featuring University of Victoria Law Professor Maneesha Deckha discussing her proposed new legal category aimed at protecting animals, on Fri., Feb. 19.

New York University will host “Animals as Legal Beings,” a webinar featuring University of Victoria Law Professor Maneesha Deckha discussing her proposed new legal category aimed at protecting animals, on Fri., Feb. 19, 1-2:30 p.m. EST.

Deckha, who recently authored Animals as Legal Beings: Contesting Anthropocentric Legal Orders (University of Toronto, 2021), calls for a reorientation of Canadian law and other western legal orders in ways that better shield animals from exploitation and to better align with their societal value.

Deckha, Lansdowne Chair in Law at the University of Victoria, will outline the legal concept put forth in her new book and discuss how contemporary legal systems can and should move toward justice for animals.
