Newly admitted students welcomed at Women’s College

ALIGARH : The Women’s College, Aligarh Muslim University organized a two-day orientation programme for the newly-admitted undergraduate female students to get them acquainted with the College environment and teachers, and help them pursue their studies industriously.

Prof Roomana N Siddiqui (Department of Psychology) briefly discussed the College’s history and spoke about the hard work and dedication of the founder of the College, Sheikh Abdullah and his wife, Waheed Jahan Begum, and how their efforts for female education fructified into such a prestigious college.

Mr Nisar Ahmad Khan, Coordinator, NEP Cell, shed light on the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and pointed out that the NEP offers multiple exit and entry points to students. He highlighted that AMU is the first university in the country to implement this programme.

Dr Sana Nawab, Senior Resident, Department of Community Medicine, spoke on ‘Adolescent Health Issues’ and acquainted the students with different aspects affecting adolescent health including nutrition, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, etc. She stressed the need to set up Adolescent Friendly Health Clinics or Centres (AFHCs) in the university and the college.

Prof Samina Khan, Coordinator, Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), discussed various clauses of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act. She urged the female students to rise against any act of sexual harassment, including not only molestation but also against unwelcome physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature.

Prof Asma Parveen (Department of Psychology) focused on the ‘Mental Health’ issues faced by college students, including symptoms of anxiety and depression. Suggesting ways to maintain good mental health, she advised students to have a healthy and balanced diet, get proper sleep, and have regular exercise including yoga and meditation to blow off anxiety.

Earlier, Prof Imrana Naseem (Officiating Principal, Women’s College) emphasized that the students should also get accustomed to the university’s culture and tradition which give this university a unique place among other centres of higher education in the country. She urged the students to take care of their personal hygiene and grooming and learn to practice basic values including regularity in classes, punctuality and respect for elders.
