NIT Andhra Pradesh conducts Online GIAN Course on ‘Nanomaterials for Water Treatment’

Being held from 14th to 18th February 2022, the course will be of interest to students, researchers, faculty and private firms keen to learn about nanomaterials, their properties, characterization techniques, and applications in different domains of Engineering.

TADEPALLIGUDEM : National Institute of Technology Andhra Pradesh is conducting a short-term Course on ‘Online GIAN Course on Nanomaterials for Water Treatment’ between 14th to 18th February 2022.

The Course is open to students pursuing post-graduate in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, and Biotechnology and researchers from government organizations including R&D laboratories and private firms. Also, faculty from academic Institutions from Engineering and Life Sciences interested in risk assessment can join this online course.

This online course is organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Andhra Pradesh. It is sponsored by Global Initiative for Academic Networks (GIAN), Ministry of Education, Government of India. Dr. Jayaram N, Registrar (i/c) NIT Andhra Pradesh presented an overview of the progress and evolution of NIT Andhra Pradesh to the participants. Dr. Vinoth Kumar Raja, the coordinator of the Institute’s GIAN section highlighted the GIAN initiative and the importance of Indian faculty collaborating with the foreign faculty in skill-building.

Highlighting the unique aspects of this online course during the Inaugural Session on 14th February 2022, Prof. C. S. P. Rao, Director, NIT Andhra Pradesh, said, “Though water being the elixir for life but access to quality water still remains a major challenge not only in India but around the globe. In view of this, Indian government has initiated ‘Jal Shakti Mission’ to provide water to each household by 2024. Similarly, state governments viz., Government of Telangana has taken up the ‘Mission Bhagiratha’ to ensure quality water available for every household of Telangana State. The Indian government also encourages researchers strive for low-cost water treatment technologies. The current practice engages various traditional methods such as slow sand filtration, oxidation, and adsorption, etc.”

Now a days various Nanomaterials (NMs) are widely used in different fields of application and found in various consumer products. Due to large surface area, modified structure, and reactivity, provide them remarkable physical, chemical and biological properties. Further, nanomaterials are found to effectively inactivate bacteria present in water but still, their mechanism has yet to be fully understood.

The course would mainly focus on the various synthesis routes of nanomaterials, properties, and their characterization techniques in detail. Further, nanomaterials interaction in water their transport mechanism, risk and their application in water and wastewater treatment, role of the oxidation process will be discussed in detail.

Addressing the Online course, Prof. Hadas Mamane Steindel, Head of Environmental Engineering Program, Tel Aviv University, Israel, said, “Water is not only about quantity but also the quality is an equal parameter, that needs to be taken into account. Nanomaterials can be a good source for water treatment; however, their ineffective use might make the water toxic. This course will, therefore, be directing the participants to use the Nanomaterials smartly for water treatment.”

Introducing the Course and Foreign Experts, Dr. Baranidharan S, Courses Coordinator, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Andhra Pradesh, said, “The course would mainly focus on the various synthesis routes of Nanomaterials, Properties and their Characterization Techniques in detail. Further, nanomaterials interaction in water, transport mechanism will be covered. The final section of the course covers the application of nanomaterials in water and wastewater treatment, role of oxidation process will be discussed in detail.”

The primary objectives of the course are as follows:

Ø To understand how NMs behave in different environmental matrices,

Ø Application of NMs in Water Treatment and its advantages over Conventional Process,

Ø NMs based Advanced Oxidation Process and its application in water, wastewater, and Industrial waters,

Ø Understand the Risk of having nanomaterials in the Environment

In addition to providing a comprehensive study, the course components will take a critical look at the conventional water treatment, advances & applications of nanomaterials in water treatment and behavior in the aquatic environment, and much more. The participants of this course will understand the concepts outlined above, through lectures and case studies.

Dr. Reshma T, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Andhra Pradesh presented the vote of thanks to the dignitaries & GIAN, Ministry of Education, Government of India and the members of the Organizing committee of this programme.
