NIT Rourkela welcomes 1st-year Undergraduate Students, Orientation Programme for 1121 fresher was held today
The orientation program for the 1st year undergraduate students was conducted today at NIT Rourkela. The orientation which was also joined by the parents aimed to inform the new students about the institute and its different functionaries, academic regulation, campus environment, department, faculties, infrastructure, and other supporting facilities. The meeting was chaired by Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao (Director, NITR). Prof. Rohan Dhiman (Registrar) also joined the event and introduced the students to deans, associate deans, heads of various departments and units, and officers of the institute. The total number of new intakes for 1st-year undergraduate programmes is 1121 including 60 foreign students, thus making it a total of approx. 8300 students in NIT Rourkela.
The event started by welcoming all the 1st year students along with an introduction to NITR and its campus facilities by Mr. Bamadev Acharya (Joint Registrar, Academic-Research & Examination). Giving the opening remark, Prof. S. K. Pratihar {(Professor- in-charge Exam & Admission (undergraduate)} congratulated the students for successfully clearing various exams and getting admission to NITR. Prof. Mukesh Gupta{Chairman (Local Organising Committee), CSAB-2022} then gave an insight into the opening and closing ranks of various programs and branches under JoSAA and CSAB. He said, “This year, our opening rank started at 365, reflecting the institute’s popular demand. I am proud to state that NITR has got student representation of almost every state and one out of five is a female student.”
The programme also featured the launch of the ‘Mini Print Issue’, a guidebook and e-newsletter by the team Monday Morning (the official student media body of NITR). The 6th edition of the mini-magazine is named “A Strangers’ Guide To NITR” and it aims to make the fresher’s transition smooth and wholesome.
The most awaited address was then delivered by Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao (Director, NIT Rourkela). He congratulated the students and motivated the student by speaking on the value-education, creativity, innovations, human excellence, and encouragement for entrepreneurship. He talked about the strong legacy of the institute. He also advised faculties and parents and said, “1st-year students are entering a whole new world. Now it is the responsibility of all of us, including the parents, to work collectively for their bright future. NITR offers a lot of opportunities to grow and learn and thus students must explore and carry a good discipline because these 4-5 years will play a major role in the rest of their lives”.
Further, the Registrar of the institute, Prof. Rohan Dhiman gave a broad overview of the history of NITR, new and ongoing projects, public perceptions, rankings, FTBI (Foundation for Technology and Business Incubation), placements, distinguished alumni, diversified and multi-disciplinary departments, etc.
The next session involved an introductory talk by different heads of units. Dean Academic, Prof. Susmita Mishra shared a snapshot of the academic pedagogy, support centres, silent features of academic regulation, attendance, and examination schemes. Prof. Sidhartha S. Jena (Dean, Student Welfare) elaborated on various clubs and societies under the Student Activity Centre and gave an insight into sports infrastructural facilities. Prof. Niranjan Panda (Chief Warden of Halls of Residence) guided the students with the rules and regulations of the hostels.
Prof. S. Paul (Chairman, Extra academic activities) spoke about how NITR nurtures the students’ all-around character by providing a platform through programmes like National Cadet Corps (NCC), NSS, yoga and natural well-being, physical education, and value education. Mr. D.K Pradhan (Assistant Librarian) gave a quick tour of library resources whereas; Dr. Champak Bhattacharyya (Head, Institute Health Centre) introduced the Institute dispensary to the students and spoke about the hospital and medical facilities. Prof. Pawan Kumar (Professor in charge of the Institute Counselling Service) talked about taking care of the psychological & mental well-being of the students. Prof. B. B. Nayak, Head (Head of the Career and Development Centre) provided a detailed overview of the placement and internship statistics. Mr. Ashish Kumar Behera, (Assistant Registrar, Academic) hosted the event’s final session, where he introduced all the faculty advisors of the institute. He concluded the event by thanking note and wished the students for valuable learning and a hassle-free academic journey.
