The programme was held under CLJD’s ongoing project titled Adhikaaron ka Gyaan, Unnati ki Pechan, supported by the Department of Justice, Government of India under DoJ’s broader scheme of ‘Designing Innovative Solutions for Holistic Access to Justice (DISHA).

The training of trainers (TOT) programme was conducted for various government officials and stakeholders who play a crucial role in preventing violence against women including police personnel (especially women police officials), Protection Officers, OSC Administrators and law teachers among others.

Professor (Dr.) G.S. Bajpai, Vice Chancellor, NLU Delhi in his opening remarks said, “In addition to the pivotal role of providing dynamic and research-oriented law education to our students, it is equally incumbent upon the university to work towards social upliftment of women and other downtrodden sections of the society. By actively conducting such sessions, NLU Delhi duly fulfils its mandate to imporve legal literacy in the society.”

The inaugural event was also attended by Mr. Chandra Mohiyar, Director (Access to Justice & Legal Aid to Poor) & Mr. Ashutosh Srivastava, Programme Manager, Department of Justice, GoI. In his address Shri Chandra Mohiyar, Director (Access to Justice), Department of Justice made an appeal to participants of the ToT Programme to clearly understand subjects covered and methodology used in the training programme as they are expected to deliver/share the same contents in their respective departments/districts.

The ToT’s objectives were multifold; from sensitizing the participants about violence directed against women, enhancing their understanding of the structural aspects of violence, reinforcing the provisions of the country’s criminal justice system to expanding their knowledge about substantive and procedural law on the subject. The stakeholders were also trained to identify the loopholes in the system and play an effective role in plugging these gaps proactively.

Dr. Amita Punj, Director, Centre for Justice, Law & Development & Associate Professor (Law), NLU Delhi noted, “Gender sensitisation has proved to be an indispensable tool in helping the law enforcement officials to effectively prevent violence against women. I would like to thank the Department of Justice, GoI and NLU Delhi for their support in conducting this training session. I am certain that the sessions will immensely help the participants who are tasked with the crucial responsibility of maintaining the law and upholding justice.”

The training programme, which included relevant case studies on gender sensitisation and its benefits, was imparted by personnel who have years of experience in helping the law enforcers combat violence against women. An array of academicians who have worked extensively on social and psychological aspects of criminal law also held interactive sessions with the participants.
