North-West University Team Highlights Commitment to Inclusivity at Expo
Student Counselling and Development on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus showcased the NWU at the recent Career and Workplace Readiness Expo for people living with disabilities that took place at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
The event, organised by the Disability Connect Foundation, brought together more than 1 200 high school learners, university students, graduates living with disabilities, as well as representatives from small businesses and leading South African corporates.
The NWU team – Nkateko Shabangu, Brian Shokane, Naledi Gumede and Botshelo Chirwa – set up an information stall to inform prospective students about the university’s courses, admission procedures, and support services.
Nkateko says they wanted to empower students to make informed decisions about their academic pursuits.
“The success of this event has left our students eager to take part in the next expo in 2025. Not only did we provide valuable information, but we also showcased our university’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all students,” he adds.
Director for student life Chris Williams says the team’s participation in the Disability Expo provided valuable opportunities for students and staff to engage with the community.
“The impact of the event will undoubtedly inspire others and shed light on the importance of creating inclusive spaces for all individuals,” he adds.
More about the expo
Combining a career expo, a conference, interactive demos and exhibitions, the event provided employment opportunities to learners, graduates and unemployed individuals with disabilities.
Key moments at the event included the presence of Collins Letswalo, CEO of the Road Accident Fund. Inspiring speeches from individuals with disabilities who have excelled in the corporate world and on sports fields left a lasting impact on the attendees. Additionally, activities such as raffles and a talent show provided a platform for students to showcase their skills and talents.
The Expo also included a staff workshop conducted by HR professionals from organisations such as Vodacom, Siemens Energy, Santam, and disability specialists from Progression. The workshop focused on strategies for supporting students living with disabilities on campuses and workplaces, emphasising effective communication and inclusivity.
