North-West University’s Management Accountants Secure Top African Awards from International Body
The North-West University (NWU) again distinguished itself as one of the country’s premier accountancy institutions when the NWU’s School of Accountancy and its Management Accountancy programme claimed three prestigious Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) Professional Africa Awards. The awards are powered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
The international alliance between the CGMA and CIMA aims to promote accounting and finance, and serves more than 698 000 members in 188 countries and territories.
The NWU won the CGMA Employability Award, which recognises a highly sought-after university for its best-in-class finance and accounting graduates through the innovative employability support given to students, working in partnership with corporates. This award also recognises educators with the best employability programme on campus for students planning to pursue the CGMA designation.
The NWU also won the CGMA Leadership Award as a Distinguished University Partner in Africa. The NWU boasts the third most impressive pass rate in the CIMA Strategic Case Study exam from 2021 to 2023 in Africa. The award also recognises the outstanding number of CGMA and CIMA exams completed successfully and the number of graduates who became CIMA students.
Lastly, the NWU won the CGMA Culture Award for Distinguished University Educator. This award recognises educators that encourage a pro-CGMA culture on their respective campuses through events that they organised in the past 12 months.
“The continued hard work and dedication of our lecturers and students in the school of Accounting Sciences is shown in the awards given,” said Heleen Janse van Vuuren, director of the school of Accounting Sciences at the NWU.
Two former NWU students were also honoured for their exceptional achievements. They are Reinhardt Hitge and Tiaan Kotze. Both Hitge’s and Kotze’s awards recognise CIMA members who have demonstrated innovative skills and competencies that contributed to the effectiveness of their department.
