North-West University’s VC shared his experiences on first year in office

North-West University (NWU) principal and vice-chancellor, Prof Bismark Tyobeka, shared his experiences and insights from his first year at the university during a media networking session on 31 May 2023 at the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus.

The primary objective of the networking session was to provide local media with the latest updates on the university’s strategic developments.

Besides various media representatives and NWU management members in attendance, the event was also attended by Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo, the executive mayor of the Mahikeng local municipality.

Reflecting on his first year as principal and vice-chancellor, Prof Tyobeka described it as an exciting and invigorating journey. He acknowledged the challenges faced along the way, emphasised the significant progress made in various key areas, and expressed his enthusiasm for the future endeavours of the university.

“During the initial three months of my tenure, I prioritised conducting a comprehensive environmental scan within the NWU. This involved engaging with all stakeholders of the university to gain insight into their lived experiences, identifying areas of strength, and pinpointing areas for improvement.

“It was truly encouraging to discover that we have a fully functional and growing institution, which I firmly believe is a treasure in South Africa and on the African continent,” said Prof Tyobeka.

He highlighted the central role of students within the university and the importance of developing infrastructure to enhance their learning experience.

“Our students are at the core of everything we do. We aim to provide them with a high-quality university experience that caters to their academic, co-curricular and support needs.

“Recognising the significance of a conducive learning and working environment, the NWU has undertaken infrastructure development projects across its campuses, including the construction of new lecture halls, laboratories, student residences, and sports facilities. These initiatives aim to enrich the overall campus community experience,” Prof Tyobeka added.

Speaking about the current review process of the NWU strategy, he explained that this process is providing the university with a roadmap for the future.

“This will guide our efforts to overcome challenges, to embrace opportunities, and to shape a sustainable and prosperous future for the NWU. We are excited about the journey ahead and remain committed to delivering a transformative educational experience for our students while making a meaningful contribution to our communities,” concluded Prof Tyobeka.

Cllr Mphehlo encouraged the university to continue fostering collaborative partnerships with the local community.
