NRF-iThemba LABS Strengthens Collaboration with NWU, Cementing Their Relationship
The National Research Foundation’s Vision 2030 articulates its commitment to contribute to the betterment of society through research and development. This entails concerted efforts to facilitate, and contribute to, the transformation of spaces, an intentional focus on impact, an unwavering commitment to excellence, and continued investment in the growth of the next generation of scientists and technicians to ensure sustainability. This cannot, however, be done in isolation and relies on strong relationships within the Higher Education Sector. NRF-iThemba LABS hosted a delegation from the North-West University, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bismark Tyobeka, on Wednesday, 13 December 2023.
“It is important to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of role-players, such as NRF-iThemba LABS, who have contributed to the quality of the development programmes offered by our Institution,” says Prof Tyobeka.
“I am especially pleased to witness all the updates to existing infrastructure that enable the facility to take up its rightful place as a national research asset not only in South Africa, but also on the African continent. We will be exploring further discussions in the coming months to unpack the challenges faced by postgraduate and post-doctoral Fellows as we provide not just a home for exceptional training, but also an incubator that nurtures and retains our talent.”
“Since 1999, North-West University has, through its Centre for Applied Radiation Science and Technology, serviced the needs of the nuclear industry through the development of an exceptional skills base. These conversations provide ideal contexts within which NRF-iThemba LABS can explore opportunities to enhance the development of skilled labour in support of strengthening South Africa’s energy mix,” says Prof Victor Tshivhase, Managing Director of NRF-iThemba LABS.
