NTU Singapore climbs to 33rd place, ranks world No.1 in four subjects by US News & World Report

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has risen 5 spots to 33rd place internationally and has been ranked among the global top 10 for 11 subject areas, including 4 subjects at No.1. This marks NTU’s best performance to date in the closely watched US News & World Report’s global university rankings.

NTU is ranked first globally for 4 subjects: Materials Science, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Condensed Matter Physics and Physical Chemistry (see table below). NTU debuted at No.1 for Condensed Matter Physics and Physical Chemistry that were newly introduced this year. NTU’s Materials Science and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology retained the top spot for the fifth and second consecutive year respectively.

In addition, NTU is placed in the global top 10 for Electrical & Electronic Engineering (2nd), Energy & Fuels (2nd), Engineering (2nd), Chemistry (3rd), Computer Science (4th), Chemical Engineering (5th) and Optics (9th), a new subject added to the rankings this year.

Other NTU subjects that did well include Civil Engineering (12th), Polymer Science (16th), Mechanical Engineering (27th), Environment/Ecology (54th), Arts and Humanities (88th), Biotechnology & Applied Microbiology (82nd), Microbiology (83rd), and Physics (86th).

NTU’s strong international and regional research reputation contributed to its improvement in the US News & World Report global rankings. NTU has climbed a total of 92 places from the 125th spot since the US News & World Report rankings began in 2014.

Professor Ling San, NTU Deputy President and Provost said, “This marks the fourth consecutive year that NTU has been ranked in the global top 50 of the US News & World Report’s rankings. Much of this success is due to the university’s faculty and staff who have shown a strong commitment to excellence in research, education and innovation. The Singapore government’s strong support has also been instrumental in NTU’s drive towards excellence.”

This latest achievement follows NTU’s climb up one spot to the 46th place in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, announced last month. Earlier in June, the UK-based rankings agency had ranked NTU No.1 in THE’s Young University Rankings for the first time.

Published annually, the US News & World Report rankings is based on 13 indicators including academic research performance, and global and regional reputations.

This year’s rankings assessed 1,750 institutions worldwide. US News also used a separate methodology to publish the top global universities in 43 subject areas, including five new subject areas: condensed matter physics, food science and technology, optics, physical chemistry and polymer science.
