NWU Commemorates Child Health Day with Stadt Primary School in Festive Collaboration
To mark Child Health Day, the Faculty of Health Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) organised some fun activities for the youngsters at Stadt Primary School to highlight the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Learners and parents from the school in Mahikeng’s Montshioa-Stadt village attended the event at the Ratshidi Hall on 12 October 2023. The aim of the event was not only to raise awareness about a healthy lifestyle, but also to collect data and encourage a good relationship with the local community.
The school’s quality learning and teaching committee (SQLTC), comprising diverse stakeholders, including government departments, businesses, non-governmental organisations and others, gave its support to the event and members also participated in the day’s activities.
A spirited group of grandmothers energetically demonstrated an aerobics routine, underscoring the importance of staying fit. The Mmabana Karatekas grabbed the learners’ attention with their karate moves and encouraged them to participate in sport as a means of embracing a healthier lifestyle.
Prof Ushotanefe Useh took the opportunity to present the findings from health data collected in 2022, and body mass index (BMI) measurements, blood-sugar testing and blood pressure assessments were done. Some learners and teachers were found to be either over- or underweight, emphasising the importance of balanced health.
In line with the Global Handwash Awareness Week, learners were shown the seven essential steps to washing hands.
Officials from the North West Provincial Health Department outlined the comprehensive support they offer to learners, including oral hygiene guidance, vaccination programmes and other measures to ensure the learners’ well-being throughout their schooling.
Eventually, the learners, gained vital insight into the significance of a healthy lifestyle and the importance of regular exercise. Armed with this newfound knowledge, the learners promised they would share this information with their families, friends and society at large. It was a fun day to spread the message of the benefits of healthy living.
