NWU Student and Academic Collaborate at BRICS Youth Innovation Summit
North-West University (NWU) student Oscar Mosenogi and senior lecturer Dr Lerato Mdaka recently attended the BRICS Youth Innovation Summit that took place on 15 and 16 May at the Innovation Hub in Pretoria.
As deputy director for projects at the South African BRICS Youth Association (SABYA), Oscar was part of the organising team, while Dr Mdaka participated as an adjudicator.
The BRICS Youth Innovation Summit 2024 brought together young innovators and entrepreneurs from BRICS+ countries to explore collaboration opportunities, share knowledge and experiences, and develop innovative solutions to common challenges. Hosted by the South African BRICS Youth Association, the summit aimed to promote youth entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable development.
Oscar is proud to have been able to represent the NWU at the summit. “Thank you to all stakeholders and the SABYA for providing a global platform for young individuals. The insights and innovative ideas were truly inspiring and played a crucial role in fostering a collaborative and forward-thinking environment. The passion and enthusiasm brought to the summit were evident and deeply appreciated,” he says.

This annual summit aims to create a platform for young innovators and entrepreneurs from BRICS nations to connect, learn from one another and address common challenges.
Given that the BRICS countries are among the world’s fastest-growing economies with a vast pool of talented and innovative youth, the programme aimed to leverage their collective creativity, knowledge and skills to promote economic growth, sustainable development and social progress.
The theme for the 2024 summit was “Innovate to Empower: Building Futures, Transforming Societies”.
