NWU Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management Honors Women and Girls in Science
The Unit of Environmental Sciences and Management (UESM) at the North-West University (NWU) marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science with a special event on 9 February 2024 at Lesego Primary School in Ikageng, Potchefstroom.
The event featured talks by prominent female scientists from the NWU’s School of Geo and Spatial Sciences, including Dr Nomfundo Sibiya and MSc students Daniella de Jager, Aneska Richter, Oarabile Masekwameng and Sonja de Beer, showcasing them as relatable role models. Career displays focusing on agriculture and climatology also provided insight into potential career paths, encouraging learners’ curiosity.
Prof Nomali Ngobese, representing the NWU’s School of Geo and Spatial Sciences, emphasised their dedication to celebrating this day, highlighting the pivotal role women play in shaping the world through science. “We actively collaborate with the NWU Science Centre to increase female participation in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.”
Prof Ngobese noted the event’s impact on the learners, with many of them being excited about interacting with university staff for the first time. The teachers at Lesego Primary School praised the collaborative effort, and believe this will have a positive influence on students and will encourage them to explore STEM fields.
“The success of the event has prompted an invitation to return next year, signalling a desire to continue empowering future generations in science. Discussions at faculty level will further solidify these efforts and ensure sustained support for women and girls in science,” added Prof Ngobese.
