NWU Welcomes Infrastructure South Africa Delegation to Highlight Student Housing Progress

On 15 May 2024 a delegation from Infrastructure South Africa (ISA), a programme within the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure, visited the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus to showcase the progress made with the 1 738-bed multi-funded student housing complex that was completed in 2022.

The project was completed in partnership with the Department of Higher Education and Training that recognised the urgent need for additional student accommodation in Mahikeng. The project, valued at R463 million, received formal approval from Dr Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.

Rofhiwa Tahula from ISA emphasised the importance of their visit. “We visit Student Housing Infrastructure Programme (SHIP) Phase 1 completed projects to capture compelling audio and visual content that effectively communicates these developments to the country. We are keen to showcase the progress made in addressing the student housing backlog and believe that SHIP Phase 1 projects will provide an excellent demonstration of the work done to date and its impact.”

Rofhiwa also highlighted the benefits of the new student accommodation. “The new student housing at the NWU brings about a significant enhancement in both comfort and convenience for students. The modern amenities and thoughtful design are sure to provide an enriching living experience that supports the academic and social needs of students from diverse backgrounds.”

The visit by the ISA delegation underscores the significant strides made in improving student housing, reflecting the broader goals of enhancing educational infrastructure and supporting student welfare in South Africa.
