Official Language (Hindi) Implementation Committee, AMU Celebrates Hindi Week

 

Aligarh : Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Hindi Week celebrations, organized by the Official Language (Hindi) Implementation Committee, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Mr Mohammad Imran IPS, Registrar, AMU said that Hindi as an official language is important for maintaining the unity of India and it is a medium of advancing shared culture.

He pointed out that the popularity of Hindi is increasing and it has also become the language of social media. “Though English is currently recognized for technical and scientific work, a developed country like Japan uses native language even for imparting science and technology education”, he added. He also stressed the need to use Hindi in official work.

Professor Ramesh Chandra Sharma, former professor, Department of Hindi discussed the status of Hindi in different historical periods. He said that since the beginning there has been a conflict between technical language and people’s language. “Language is not created by force, but it works on the basis of principles and changes gradually”, Prof Sharma remarked.

He threw light on the relations between Hindi and Urdu and their evolution and discussed how the rulers in the medieval period strengthened the relations between Hindi and Urdu. He further said that about 60 percent vocabulary in Hindi is taken from other languages.

Professor Mohammad Ashiq Ali, Secretary, Official Language (Hindi) Implementation Committee, and Chairman, Department of Hindi said that the reach of Hindi language is growing day by day and official work in Hindi has also increased, which is a matter of satisfaction.

He said that employment opportunities in Hindi have also increased. “Hindi is not only the mother tongue of a large number of people but it is also a symbol of the nation’s identity and pride. In the year 1949, Hindi was accepted as the official language of India by the Constituent Assembly. Since then it is celebrated every year on September 14”, Prof Ali added.

Presiding over the inaugural session, Professor Arif Nazir, Dean, Faculty of Arts, said that Hindi is an advanced language and the government is encouraging translation of original works in different languages, so that people from different linguistic backgrounds feel the richness of languages and they come closer.

Professor Shambhunath conducted the programme, while Prof. Tasneem Suhail proposed a vote of thanks. Prof. M Shahul Hameed, Coordinator of the Hindi week function was also present on the occasion.
