Ohio State University: Ohio State News Alert: Fans encouraged to enjoy night game safely
Ohio State University President Kristina M. Johnson is encouraging the university community to support the Buckeyes in a Big Ten showdown against Penn State this weekend – but to keep safety top of mind.
In a new video message, Johnson thanked students who celebrated responsibly and were good neighbors in the off-campus area during Ohio State’s Parent & Family Weekend.
Ohio State hosts Penn State in a key Big Ten Conference game at Ohio Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Department of Athletics encourages fans to “scarlet the stadium” by layering up and wearing scarlet jerseys, sweatshirts, hoodies, sweaters, overcoats and/or blankets.
Students are asked to cheer on the Buckeyes and be safe while doing so. Ohio State is asking supporters to celebrate responsibly and respect classmates, neighbors and the community. Students hosting or attending a party are urged to not let it get out of control.
If safety becomes an issue, students can ask police for help, or dial 9-1-1 in emergencies. Additional safety resources are also available, such as Community Crime Patrol or safety ambassadors who can offer assistance.
Students and fans are urged to look for lighted pathways and use them while walking around the University District. Students can take advantage of the university’s CABS service on campus or Lyft Ride Smart to get home safely.
Columbus police continue to see a drop in major crimes reported in the off-campus area in the University District.
A personal safety device from the Office of Student Life is still available for pickup. Students can also check out the Stay Safe, Buckeyes class through BuckeyeLearn, which includes valuable information on safety awareness, self-defense techniques and much more.
