Ohio State University posts historically successful APR rates
Data released today for the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate shows The Ohio State University and its student-athletes and athletic programs continue to succeed in the classroom.
In the 19th year of APR data for most teams, the scores provide a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for academic eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. The most recent APR scores are based on a multiyear rate that averages scores from the 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years.
Ohio State posted a cross-sport multiyear rate of 993, the highest in school history. Of the 31 Buckeye sports programs, 26 have multiyear rates better than 990, with the football program’s rate of 993 an all-time high. The 2021-22 single-year rate was 988 for Ohio State.
John Davidson, Ohio State Faculty Athletics Representative, noted the work Ohio State student-athletes, coaches and staff put in to achieve success.
“The APR is designed to measure whether student-athletes are maintaining eligibility and are being retained by the institution,” Davidson said. “This year’s APR release shows that Ohio State continues to perform very well and, in fact, keeps getting better. Achieving a multiyear score of 993 – the highest in our institution’s history – reflects a culture consistently aiming to improve all aspects of the student-athlete experience.”
For 2021-22, 17 Ohio State programs had perfect scores: men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s hockey, women’s rowing, women’s soccer, softball, women’s tennis and men’s and women’s volleyball.
Seven sports recorded perfect multiyear scores: men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, rifle, men’s soccer and women’s volleyball.
“It starts with our coaches, who recruit with the whole student-athlete in mind,” Davidson said. “Our academic and athletic staff reinforces our commitment to classroom success every day. Most of all, our talented Buckeyes work very hard to excel in all their endeavors at Ohio State.”
This academic year, 244 Buckeyes have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten team, with spring and at-large sports honors to be awarded later this spring, and 765 were recognized as Ohio State Scholar-Athletes. At autumn commencement, 49 current and former student-athletes received their degrees and nearly 200 are slated to graduate Sunday at spring commencement.
