On the development of the Arctic region

On March 3-4, two events were held at which strategically important issues affecting the interests of the Russian Arctic regions were considered.
The first of them – the VI International Conference “The Arctic: Offshore Projects and Sustainable Development of Regions” – was held in Moscow at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation with the participation of representatives of the Federation Council, the State Duma, federal executive bodies, subjects of the Federation, scientific and expert communities, business community.

At the round table meeting of the conference “International cooperation in the Arctic. Opportunities and prospects” Advisor to the Rector’s Office, Scientific Director of the Institute of Northern European Studies of PetrSU, Doctor of Economics Valery Aleksandrovich Shlyamin made a presentation “Prospective directions of international cooperation of regions in the Arctic. View from the Republic of Karelia”.

The report aroused the interest of the meeting participants. The moderator of the round table, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation Nikolai Viktorovich Korchunov noted the relevance of the project initiatives of Petrozavodsk State University, which will be taken into account by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation,

The second event – the seminar “Integrated development of the regions of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation” – was held in St. Petersburg on the basis of the Higher School of Economics.

The results of interdisciplinary studies of the socio-economic development of most of the Russian Arctic regions were considered.

V. A. Shlyamin made a presentation “On the coordination of the spatial development of the territories of the Western Arctic of the Russian Federation.” More than twenty experts took part in the discussion, many of whom are known not only in our country, but also abroad.

The results of the discussion will be taken into account in the formation of proposals for both the forthcoming Strategy of the socio-economic development of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030, and for regional strategies, said Valery Shlyamin.
