Oregon State University to host talk on equity-minded leadership in community colleges

Higher education leader Pamela Eddy will speak on developing community college leaders who promote social justice at the Oregon State University College of Education’s annual Charles E. Carpenter lecture Feb. 23.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at OSU’s Portland Center and a livestream of the talk will be shown via Zoom.

Eddy is a professor of higher education and associate provost of faculty affairs at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. Her lecture, “A Blueprint for Equity-Minded Leadership in Community Colleges,” will highlight data from her national study of senior and midlevel community college leaders centered on the question of how to develop leaders who promote social justice and equity.

Using data from the study, Eddy and her colleagues have built a model for developing community college leaders who can help campuses move beyond individual level workshops on diversity, equity and inclusion to campus-wide changes that can help close persistent equity gaps.

The event is free and open to the public. The in-person event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by the lecture at 7 p.m. The livestream will begin at 7 p.m. The OSU Portland Center is located downtown in the Meier & Frank Building, 555 S.W. Morrison St.

The Charles E. Carpenter Lecture was established in 2004 to support advances in professional development for community college leaders. The lecture honors the work and memory of Carpenter, a founder of the community college leadership program in OSU’s College of Education.
