Orientation program for new Library Science students

 

Aligarh : The newly admitted Bachelor in Library and Information Science (B.Lib.I.Sc.) and Master of Library and Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc.) students were given an overview of the of university from academics to social activities including course requirements, satisfactory progress, reference materials, disciplinary procedures and the university culture in an online Orientation cum Fresher’s Program of Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

In the keynote address, Prof Nisar Ahmad Khan (Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences) said that the Department of Library and Information Science is a promising department and a career in the field is highly demanded in both government and private sectors.

“Besides working as librarians, students of the Library and Information Science can also work as a research assistant to professors or in publishing companies in preparing bibliographies and catalogues. One can also go for further studies in this field”, he added.

He pointed out that the Library science is an interdisciplinary course with a vast scope of expanding its horizons coupled with mathematical and statistical models used in its research.

Delivering the welcome address, Prof Nishat Fatima (Chairperson, Department of Library and Information Science) said: “Librarians can easily find jobs in universities, colleges, court houses, public schools, law offices, museums and local library buildings. Being passionate about books and learning is a must for a librarian”.

She also spoke on the history of the department and the Maulana Azad Library of the university and urged the new students to make the best use of the facilities for knowledge acquisition and skill learning.

Prof Naushad Ali PM spoke about the nobility and service oriented nature of the library science profession.

The profession acknowledges many facets of knowledge and competitive skills which the students need to acquire and learn for job opportunities, he added.

Prof Sudharma Haridasan, Prof Mehtab Alam and Dr Mohammad Nazim discussed the process of acquisition, processing, organising and maintaining documents in a library and providing various types of information services based on documents.

Prof Masoom Raza extended the vote of thanks and Dr Muzamil Mushtaq coordinated the programme.
