Peking University holds 2020 Autumn Sports Meeting
Peking: Peking University held its 5th Autumn Sports Meeting at Wu-si Sports Field on October 17.
After the flag-raising ceremony, Qian Junwei, director of the Department of PE, expressed in an opening remark his wish for the campus community to kick-start a healthy habit of exercising to nourish the body and soul. Aerobics teacher Che Lei from the Department of PE led teachers and students in a warm-up run, where they went for a lap around the track before heading for a loop around Weiming Lake in a 3km PKU Welcome Run.
This year’s Autumn Sports Meeting & Freshmen Recreational Sports Meeting saw 685 athletes from 33 teams participate in a total of 52 competitive events, while nearly 2000 teachers and students signed up for the orientation run.
The atmosphere was incredibly vibrant, with joy and laughter filling the air. On the track and field young athletes gave their all to defend their department’s honor. While engaging in a host of recreational activities put on by the event, students fully displayed their sense of camaraderie.
After a competitive round of matches, the Health Science Center Preparatory Program, the School of Economics, and the School of Physics came out in the top 3 for total points in Group A, while the School of Marxism, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and the School of International Studies placed in the top 3 of Group B.
This was the first major on-campus sports event that PKU had held since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Department of PE adapted event activities to avoid massive crowds and took precautionary measures to ensure the safety of all those involved. These measures included but not limited to set up devices at the entrance to take each participant’s temperature, providing disinfectants and sanitizers.
