People urged to use green energy resources

 

ALIGARH  : Urging the participants of a national seminar on ‘Green energy transition and the role of academic institutions’, to help spread awareness for energy conservation and promote the use of renewable sources of energy, the chief guest, Mr Lalit Bohra (IRTS), Joint Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India and Director General, National Institute of Solar Energy, MNRE said that there is an essential requirement of transition to green energy by adopting solar energy, increasing energy efficiency, preventing wastage and raising awareness. The seminar was organized by the Electricity Department, Aligarh Muslim University.

Mr Bohra appreciated the efforts of AMU in all these areas and lauded the new initiative of joint M.Tech. programme started by AMU and the National Institute of Solar Energy.

He also visited the 6.5MWp set up of solar energy on the university campus.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohammad Gulrez talked about international initiatives and their result in the area of climate change. He expressed hope that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will provide avenues to the university for more productive collaborations in future.

The guest of honour, Mr Mehtab Singh (IRSE), Former Chief Electrical Engineer, Indian Railways and Former Chairman, Delhi Local Network of ITE (UK) highlighted the green energy initiative by Indian railways and the institutions of engineering and technology, UK. He appreciated AMU’s contribution to the area of green energy and emphasized that there is a huge scope for properly trained students in this area.

Another guest of honour, Mr Atul Vats (IAS), Vice Chairman, Aligarh Development Authority highlighted the importance of public participation in the green energy transition. He said that the Aligarh Development Authority is exploring the possibility of implementation of a decarbonization initiative and urged the university to support these initiatives.

AMU Registrar, Mr Mohammad Imran (IPS), who was also a guest of honour, said that the threat of climate change has to be understood and conveyed. The university can utilize the large number of students in making the campaign more impactful. He also emphasized the importance of behavioural change for energy conservation.

Prof. Mohammad Rihan, Coordinator, Centre for Integrated Green and Renewable Energy, Member Incharge, Electricity Department and Convener, Green University Project, AMU said that the national targets for green energy are making a radical change in the energy system. Academic institutions have a key role to play in making the green energy transition successful and sustainable.

The M.Tech. students Dushyant Singh and Muntaza Mudassir and a student of STS School Manya Gupta also spoke on the topic.

Associate MIC, Department of Electricity, Dr Mohd. Ajmal Kafeel extended a vote of thanks and Mr Aley Imran conducted the programme.
