PetrSU participates in a comprehensive geographic study of waterfalls
M.S. Potakhin, project manager for a grant from the Russian Geographical Society “Unknown Waterfalls of the European North of Russia”, Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism at PetrSU, spoke about the discovered peculiar features of the Karelian waterfalls, about the specifics of field work on their study and what was remarkable during the expedition.
Scientists of the Institute of Water Problems of the North of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences within the framework of the project under the grant of the Russian Geographical Society “Unknown Waterfalls of the European North of Russia” (implementation period from August 2020 to April 2021) are engaged in a comprehensive geographical study of waterfalls, including previously known and promising for identification.
Previous experience in the study of water bodies in the North will help hydrologists deepen their knowledge and obtain more detailed information in a new project, which is in the nature of recreational-geographical and landscape research. The results of the expeditions will subsequently compile a single database of waterfalls in the form of an electronic resource in the public domain and will be taken into account when designing tourist routes.
