Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile: Mathematical Reasoning Workshop

Due to the pandemic, this year the activity is carried out in an online format, and with this a national coverage has been achieved, with a wide presence of the country’s regions and with a significant predominance of public education. Furthermore, 57% of the selected students corresponded to women, “which indicates that with this activity we are encouraging young women to choose careers in the scientific field, -science, technology, engineering and mathematics-, thus contributing to reduce the aforementioned gap to the participation of women in male-dominated careers, ”rector Ignacio Sánchez points out in a letter published by El Mercurio.

“This coming week we inaugurate the tenth version of the Mathematical Reasoning Workshop (TRM), organized by the UC Faculty of Mathematics. This is a teaching space, free and open to all high schools and colleges that, for ten years now, has offered an opportunity for young people with mathematical concerns to enhance their skills and deepen their knowledge, sharing the same interest with other students.

Although the pandemic has prevented the activity from taking place in person this year, being in an online format we have achieved national coverage, with a wide presence of the country’s regions and with a significant predominance of public education. It is important to highlight that 57% of the selected students corresponded to women, which indicates that with this activity we are encouraging young women to choose careers in the scientific field, -science, technology, engineering and mathematics-, thus contributing to reduce the gap referred to the participation of women in male-dominated careers.

“Since its inception, the TRM has already selected more than 3,500 students, with great results and evaluation of the workshop. This year alone, more than 2,000 applications were received and more than six hundred outstanding students were selected, most of them from second and third half “- Ignacio Sánchez, rector

Since its inception, the TRM has already selected more than 3,500 students, with great results and evaluation of the workshop. This year alone, more than 2,000 applications were received and more than 600 outstanding students were selected, most of them in second and third grade. It is very important to highlight the commitment and dedication of the faculty faculty. Through this initiative, we seek to cultivate in young people fundamental values such as autonomy, companionship, teamwork, perseverance and interest in knowledge.

We must recognize the trust of young people and their families in our university, the workshop will mean a first approach to higher education. This experience is an opportunity to deepen your knowledge of mathematics, while developing abstract reasoning. This aspect will help them to pose their own challenges and achieve the goals that they set for themselves, which will be of great help in strengthening their capacities and in their future professional and personal development ”.
