Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile: SACRU Alliance will hold a second webinar on the role of universities in the face of climate crisis

The international network of Catholic universities, in which UC participates along with seven other institutions, will organize these meetings for students, academics and the general public. It will address how higher education institutions can contribute to solving the challenges in the field of the complex socio-environmental situation facing the Earth.

The SACRU (Strategic Alliance of Catholic Research Universities) network of universities together with the UC Vice-Rector’s Office for International Affairs, will organize a second webinar on “Integral Ecology and the Working Future: Reimagining University Education” : re-imagining University Education ”) , whose objective is to reflect on the role of universities in the context of the ecological crisis. One of the purposes is to delve into the need to seek – from the academy – systemic solutions to this problem.

The meeting will be held through the Zoom platform on June 15 at 8:30 AM (Santiago and New York time), and will feature the participation of Mary Evelyn Tucker, an academic from Yale University and Professor Juan Carlos Muñoz from the Catholic University as panelists. There will be simultaneous English / Spanish translation.

According to one of the organizers of this meeting and coordinator of International Affairs of the UC Faculty of Theology , Román Guridi, they seek to collaborate in the conversation about the role of universities in the current changing context, particularly in the face of the socio-environmental crisis. “We have asked all the speakers the same four questions that have to do with how universities are not only preparing students for the future, but are helping to generate that future,” he says.

This initiative arises from one of the SACRU working groups entitled “Catholic universities caring for our common home and the wellbeing of all people” , which takes as one of its references the principles proposed by the encyclical Laudato si´, which popularizes the notion of integral ecology in an attempt to make visible the need for systemic solutions to the ecological crisis and the interconnection between environmental challenges and social.

Along these lines, he details that “we seek to delve into what transformations are required to make this future possible from the point of view of the training we provide in our universities, but also through research and the impact on our societies.”

The webinars are intended for students, academics and all those who are interested in reflecting on universities in the current context. The SACRU Alliance is made up of the Australian Catholic University (Australia) , Boston College (United States) , the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) , the University of Sophia (Japan) , the University Portuguese Catholic (Portugal) , the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Italy) and the Ramon Llull University (Spain) .
