Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile: SUMA UC: The program that allows schoolchildren to take a university course opened their applications

Until November 30, applications are open for the subjects of Pre-Calculus and Mathematical Reasoning that are part of the academic program for SUMA UC students. The courses are intended for students between first and third grade who want to experience university life through a regular and validatable course at UC.

For the fourth year in a row, the UC School of Mathematics opens its doors to high school students who want to experience college life before leaving college, through SUMA UC .

Sum UC is an academic program that offers students in grades one through three to participate in the UC summer academic season by taking a first semester math course.

“SUMA UC complements the wide range of actions aimed at spreading our discipline among the youngest. The goal is that high school students can live the experience of being a UC rookie ”- Mario Ponce, dean

This season, the Pre – Calculus and Mathematical Reasoning courses will be taught , by the academics of the Faculty of Mathematics, María Isabel Rauld and Gregorio Moreno .

“These courses are the same as those taught in different UC majors, dictated by the same professors who teach classes throughout the year, so that SUMA UC students live the university experience, with the same academic quality as a regular student. In addition, the students who pass their field will be able to validate it when they enter the Catholic University “, explains Alexis Alvear, deputy director of Relations with the Society.

The Pre-Calculus and Mathematical Reasoning courses are part of the first year of the curriculum of more than 20 careers.

“They are the same courses that are taught in different UC majors, dictated by the same professors who teach classes throughout the year, so that SUMA UC students live the university experience, with the same academic quality as a regular student” – Alexis Alvear, deputy director of Relations with the Society.

For Mario Ponce, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, “SUMA UC complements the wide range of actions aimed at spreading our discipline among the youngest. The goal is that high school students can live the experience of being a UC rookie ”.

“SUMA UC allows early insertion into university life, with subjects and with a first-rate academic body and with the same infrastructure as regular students. It is undoubtedly an advantage, since it shortens the gap between university and school, allowing young people to enter better prepared and to make the most of their university experience ”, says Alejandro Jara, Director of Relations with Society.

Beyond health restrictions, SUMA UC 2022 classes will be developed online to bring college and math disciplines closer to young people across the country, regardless of geographic barriers.

Classes begin on Monday, January 3, 2022. The application process is open until November 30 through the page sumauc.mat.uc.cl .
