Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC): Extension Center bets on the strokes of José Ignacio León

Until January 28, the art gallery of the UC Extension Center (Alameda 390) is exhibiting the exhibition “Punto de vista”, which brings together drawings by the visual artist and academic of the UC School of Art José Ignacio León Luque .

The exhibition includes a selection of records –drawn freehand in situ with a pen on paper– , through which “they have sought to understand and understand themselves in relation to a foreign city: Barcelona”, in the words of the artist. These drawings/records are part of the doctoral thesis “Travel and Conquest. Records of a foreign experience in the city of Barcelona 2016-2018”.

“The function that I propose for drawing is to record what is there”, indicates the exhibitor, citing the British art historian of Austrian origin Ernst Gombrich. In this sense, he points out that he values ​​”the position of observation in space with respect to of the awareness of the environment, as well as the choices, sequence and duration required by its specificity; process in which I assume the subjective interpretation and the translation in situ to graphic codes based on a perspective scheme”.


From the action of drawing to register the experience of being there, inside, involved with a certain sector of the city or with respect to a planned or random route, the subjective considerations from which daily choices are manifested are put to the test . That is constituted in the expression of a “subjectivity that investigates, values ​​and expresses itself graphically with respect to space, time and permanence with which its qualities and characteristics are attended, making this experience transfigure into place and mean as circumstance, situation and relationship for a certain urban context”, according to the artist.

It is a personal journey, an invitation to share from an intimacy, from one point of view to another’s point of view, configuring a graphic trace of observations and interpretations related to the perception of urban space. That is, its formal qualities and characteristics and use, questioning the experience of space regarding its perception, cognition and representation, revealing the possibilities in the act of drawing.

The UC academic clarifies that, since it is a registration exercise referring to a route, “decoding will imply attending to the coherence of the choices that make up the whole, as well as the relationships and possibilities of the proposal.”
