POSTECH Commemorates 30th Anniversary of Late First President Ho-Gil Kim

Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) is set to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the passing of its late first President Ho-Gil Kim through a memorial symposium and various tributes.

Dr. Ho-Gil Kim, a world-renowned physicist and esteemed educator, served as POSTECH’s inaugural president in 1986. Under his leadership, POSTECH evolved into Korea’s first research university, making substantial contributions to both the local and national educational and research landscape. Tragically, Dr. Kim lost his life in an untimely accident in April 1994.

The memorial event, coordinated by the Mueunjae Memorial Society (Chairman Seunghwan Kim) established to uphold the educational philosophy and founding principles of the late President Ho-Gil Kim and to spread his spirit both internally and externally, is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. with a memorial service at the Mueunjae Memorial Hall. This hall, named after President Kim’s pen name which symbolizes the idea that “learning knows no bounds,” will serve as the starting point for the day’s activities. Attendees will then embark on a tour of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, followed by a memorial symposium and other associated events.

The symposium, themed “Old Future, New Leap Forward,” will concentrate on education, science, and technology for societal progress and innovation. Presentations will delve into topics such as “The Evolution from the Iron and Steel Nation to the Education Nation” (by Distinguished Professor Byung-Yeon Kim of Department of Economics at Seoul National University), “Reaffirming POSTECH’s Philosophy: The Inception of the Second Building in the 30th Anniversary of Mueunjae” (by Seong Keun Kim, President of POSTECH), and “The Future of Science, Technology, and Accelerators” (by Noh Do Young, President of the Institute for Basic Science). The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion.
