POSTECH: Korea’s First Fields Medalist June Huh to Meet with POSTECH
Professor June Huh from Princeton University, the first Korean mathematician to receive the Fields Medal, will meet with members of POSTECH on November 4, 2022.
The Department of Mathematics at POSTECH has invited Professor June Huh to the ‘POSTECH Mathematics Open Lecture Series 2022: Fields Symposium’ to be held at Pohang’s CHANGeUP GROUND on November 4th. The symposium will be held as an online meeting with Professor Huh, followed by Professor Sang-il Oum of KAIST and Professor Yoonbok Lee of Incheon National University who will introduce the achievements of Fields Medalists Professor June Huh and Professor James Maynard (University of Oxford of U.K.)
Professor June Huh, who was awarded the Fields Medal in July 2022, rose to stardom for “bringing the ideas of Hodge theory to combinatorics, the proof of the Dowling–Wilson conjecture for geometric lattices, the proof of the Heron–Rota–Welsh conjecture for matroids, the development of the theory of Lorentzian polynomials, and the proof of the strong Mason conjecture.” Considered as the Nobel Prize in mathematics, the Fields Medal is the most prestigious prize in mathematics awarded to a mathematician under the age of 40 for outstanding achievement.
The second part of the Fields Symposium will be held on December 9 online with Professor Maryna Viazovska (Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, Switzerland), one of the Fields Medalist of 2022. POSTECH Mathematics professors Sungmun Cho and Kunwoo Kim will introduce the achievements of the two Fields Medalists, professors Marina Viazovska and Hugo Duminil-Copin of the French Academy of Sciences.
At the symposium, a general lecture will provide the opportunity to interact with the Fields Medalists and to help the general public to understand the outstanding research achievements in mathematics. 50 high school students from the city of Pohang as well as member of POSTECH will be given the opportunity to attend the lecture on a first-come, first-served basis.
