President Murmu addresses 74th Human Rights Day function; Says, developing sensitivity, sympathy are keys to promoting human rights

President Droupadi Murmu has stressed the need for expanding the notion of justice among all. She said, developing sensitivity and sympathy is the key to promoting human rights. President Murmu said, if people can imagine themselves in the place of those who are treated as less than human, it would open their eyes and compel them to do the needful.

Addressing the 74th Human Rights Day celebrations in New Delhi today, President Murmu said, there is a so-called golden rule which says “Treat others as you would like them to treat you”. That sums up the human rights discourse beautifully.

Talking about the initiatives, National Human Rights Commission has taken in the last year, President Murmu said that National Human Rights Commission has been making the best possible efforts to spread awareness about human rights.

She said, in its 30th year, the Commission has done a commendable job of protecting as well as promoting human rights. It has also participated in various global forums for human rights. President Murmu said, India is proud of the fact that its work has been appreciated internationally.

On challenges of climate changes being faced by the entire world, the President said that the challenges are enormous and forcing people to redefine the concept of human rights, therefore, the world must consider the environmental dimensions of justice now.

She said, people must relearn – to treat nature with dignity. This is not only a moral duty, but necessary for survival of humans too.

AIR Correspondent reports that Human Rights Day is celebrated on the 10th December every year to commemorate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UDHR, which was adopted and proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948 as the shared standard yardstick to protect human rights across the globe. The theme of this year celebrations is ‘Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All.
