Aligarh : Prof Afifullah Khan, Department of Wildlife Sciences, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been appointed as an Officer-on-Special Duty-OSD (Development) for two years with immediate effect.
Besides his extensive teaching and research experience, Prof Afifullah has held several important administrative posts in the university, including the positions of Proctor, Assistant Director of the Centre for Promotion of Science, Assistant Dean Students’ Welfare and Coordinator of University Schools. He has been the Chairman of the Department of Wildlife Sciences for two terms (2008-11 and 2017-20).
Prof Afifullah joined as a faculty member in 1989 and was subsequently promoted to the position of professor in 2009.
Exploring ecological patterns and processes using radio-telemetry and remote sensing is his thrust area. He is renowned in academic circles and the scientific community for investigating the movement and habitat utilisation pattern of elephants and continues to work on mammalian and avian species and communities.
Prof Afifullah introduced the application of remote sensing and GIS in wildlife studies at the Post-Graduate level and is currently guiding research in landscape and radiation ecology.
He has published numerous research papers in peer-reviewed journals, wrote academic books, contributed more than 13 chapters in knowledge-based volumes and books published by national and international publishers including the Oxford University Press, and completed 18 technical reports.
Prof Afifullah is on the panel of scientific journals and has participated in more than 50 academic events in India and abroad.
He has been a consultant of ‘The Energy and Resources Institute’ to evaluate the World Bank Forestry Project of the Government of Uttar Pradesh and is a member of several committees constituted by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India and WWF-India.
Prof Afifullah has served as a member of the Tiger Protection Committee and the State Wildlife Board, Uttar Pradesh. He was also nominated as a member of one of the regional expert committees constituted by the MoEF&CC for Evaluation of Management Effectiveness of National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries in India.
