Prof Qayyum Husain appointed as Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Srinagar


Aligarh: Former Dean of the Faculty of Life Science, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and a senior Bio-Chemistry academic, Prof Qayyum Husain has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the Cluster University of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The order in this regard was issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Shri Manoj Sinha who is also the Chancellor of the Cluster University of Srinagar.

“In exercise of the powers vested in me under Section 12 of the Srinagar and Jammu Cluster Universities Act, 2016, I Manoj Sinha, Chancellor, Cluster University of Srinagar hereby appoint Professor Qayyum Husain as the Vice Chancellor of the Cluster University of Srinagar,” the order reads.

As per the order, the term of Prof Qayyum as the new Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Srinagar will be for three years with effect from the date he assumes the charge.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor extended congratulations to Prof Qayyum for his new assignment.

Prof Qayyum has attained all educational qualifications from AMU. He did his BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, MSc, M.Phil and Ph.D in Biochemistry in 1980, 1982, 1984 and 1987, respectively.

He joined the teaching position in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences AMU as a Lecturer in 1987. After his promotion as Reader in the department in 1997, he was subsequently appointed as a Professor in 2005.

Prof Qayyum has worked at the Institute of Bioprocess Engineering, Technical University of Kaiserslautern, Germany on the DAAD Revisiting Fellowship (2008-2009) and he was also a DAAD Fellow in the German Academic Exchange Program for visiting Indian Researchers at the University of Konstanz, Faculty of Biology, Germany (1992-1994).

At the Jazan University, Jazan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he was Professor and Coordinator, Clinical Biochemistry, College of Applied Medical Sciences (2011- 2014); Prof Qayyum was also a member of the Research Committee, College of Applied Medical Sciences and Internal Review Committee for research project funding.

He was appointed as the External Assessor by Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Putra, Malaysia for a period of three years in 2012. The university appointed him again as an External Assessor in 2018 for the appointment of associate professors and professor in the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences and related subjects.

Prof Qayyum reviewed research proposals submitted to the FONDECYT Regular 2019 grant competition, an initiative of the Chilean National Science and Technology Commission (CONICYT – Chile). He has been the External Reviewer, for the award of various research projects sanctioned by the Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates since 2019.

He has held honorary Membership of the American Chemical Society, U.S.A (2007-2010) and the Society of Chemical Industry, U.K (2006-2007).

Prof Qayyum was a member of Indian Science Congress (2007-2008); Society of Microbiology, India (2000-2002); Society of Biological Chemists, India (1983-2000) and Society of Developmental Biologists, India (1994).

With a teaching experience and research experience of over 33 and 36 years respectively, Prof Qayyum has guided more than 20 Ph.Ds. His research papers are regularly published in peer-reviewed journals.
