Prof Shahid Farooq passes away

Aligarh : Distinguished academician, Professor Shahid Farooq, passed away in Aligarh. He retired in 2019 after teaching for close to four decades.

Prof Farooq was appointed as a lecturer at the Department of Geology in 1985 and was promoted to the position of a professor. He was a science enthusiast, who applied his inquisitiveness to understand new things through observation and investigation.

He was deeply loved by his students for whom he developed and maintained a website, http://www.geol-amu.org through which students and geology enthusiasts could access study notes, resource material and other invaluable research material.

Prof Farooq a devoted promoter of science and worked tirelessly to conduct educational awareness programs on Science and Technology for students from underprivileged backgrounds under the aegis of Centre for Promotion of Science.

He was a recipient of many awards and fellowships including the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun fellowship in which his research was funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

Prof Farooq published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals such Science Reporter, Current Science, the Indian Journal of Earth Sciences, Journal of the Geological Survey of India, Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing and Journal of Environmental Research and Development among others.

The deceased’s wife, Prof Syeda Nuzhat Zeba is the Dean, Faculty of Arts at AMU.
