Prof Syed E Hasan delivers lecture on ‘Medical Geology’

Aligarh, September 28: Eminent geoscientist, Prof Syed E Hasan from the University of Missouri, USA delivered a lecture on ‘Medical Geology’ at the Audio-Visual Hall of the Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Delineating on the topic, Prof Hasan discussed the contribution of Medical Geology to the society. He urged researchers and students to work in interdisciplinary fields.

Prof Hasan pointed out that the geology plays a vital role in the well being of inhabitants as our health depends on the air, water and food available in the areas we live in.

He further discussed how volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides and other natural hazards leave populations with diseases and health issues.

Talking about diseases and their geological relations; Prof Hasan emphasised that as a medical geologist working on various diseases, one needs to understand the chemistry and health implications of elements such as cadmium, mercury, arsenic, lead and chromium and how they are mobilised in dust during geological events.

He also highlighted the application of geological materials in pharmaceuticals and health care products. A question and answer session followed the lecture. Professor Abu Talib, Chairperson, Department of Geology thanked Prof Hasan for taking out time for the lecture from his busy schedule.
