Professor Xue Qikun of Tsinghua University Earns Nation’s Highest Science and Technology Recognition

On the morning of June 24, the National Science and Technology Conference, the National Science and Technology Awards Conference, and the Academicians’ Conference of the two academies were held in Beijing. The 2023 National Highest Science and Technology Award was announced, and Xue Qikun, a professor at Tsinghua University, president of the Southern University of Science and Technology, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a famous condensed matter physicist, won this honor.

In response to the concerns of the past century, he discovered the quantum anomalous Hall effect experimentally in a Chinese laboratory, achieving the “world’s first”; he challenged the world’s difficult problems and led a team of Chinese scientists to boldly propose academic ideas that are different from the mainstream in the study of high-temperature superconductors. Xue Qikun has repeatedly sent a strong Chinese voice to the global scientific community by uniting and collaborating to tackle key problems, not afraid to become a “pioneer”, cultivating young innovative talents, and doing “quality scientific research”, promoting the “quantum leap” of condensed matter physics in my country and winning the strategic commanding heights in the next information technology revolution.

He is “a small boat sailing out from the Yimeng Mountains”, a “7-11 academician” who enjoys exploring the mysteries of nature in pursuit of perfection, and a “quantum dreamer” who cares about the country and is brave enough to climb the pinnacle of science.
