Queen Mary University of London Announces Recipients of Education Excellence Awards and President and Principal’s Prizes
The Awards and Prizes celebrate some of the most innovative approaches to creating and delivering outstanding teaching across the full range of Queen Mary disciplines.
During the ceremony, Professor Colin Bailey, President and Principal, recognised exemplary work with new technology, academic support, curriculum improvements, student co-creation, and new pedagogic and assessment approaches.
Professor Colin Bailey said:
“I would like to congratulate everyone who was nominated for an award tonight. Everyone who has been nominated is thinking differently and creatively to deliver excellence in education, be that through innovate methods of teaching, embedding employability in the curriculum, and supporting our diverse student community to progress and succeed. This always makes the task of choosing this year’s recipients a challenge, and I would also like to thank those who made and supported nominations. I am especially pleased to have previous recipients of the Awards and Prizes at the event, several of whom have gone on to achieve national recognition for their educational innovation.”
Education Excellence Awards winners
Humanities and Social Sciences
Dr S M A Moin and Professor Yasmin Ibrahim
For Storytelling Unboxed, a social venture and platform that seeks to foster innovative teaching and learning pedagogies, community building, and industry alliances bringing professionals and students together with these groups.
Dr Angela Dunstan
Angie redesigned two modules within the School of English and Drama prioritising scalable small group teaching off-campus in walking seminars and museums visits, which has resulted in substantial growth in Associate students. She has also streamlined Associate ‘onboarding’, simplifying complex procedures to boost student retention.
The Queen Mary MSc Investment Fund Team
This is an impactful platform centred around teaching, enabling the application of cutting-edge trading and investment analysis knowledge in the real-world finance landscape. It helps students gain experience in Fund Management.
Science and Engineering
The BUPT-QMUL Joint Teaching and Learning Centre
Awarded for a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in teaching and learning, particularly in Transnational Education, holding workshops and a flagship international conference event and encouraging participation by industry, government and professional bodies here and in China.
Dr Tassos Tombros, Dr Mahesha Samaratunga, Dr Usman Naeem
Introduced a student engagement framework in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, supporting learners with peer-led sessions in getting back on track with their studies; since its introduction, student progression has significantly increased.
Dr Ruth Rose and Dr Timothy Fulton
Working with Student Services and co-created with students, they have improved the support provision for students in the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences who have additional access requirements to ensure that programmes are accessible and inclusive for all students.
Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry
The Clinical Science Integration and Preparing for Placement in Physiology team
Created teaching sessions to help students transition from the classroom to the clinical environment, where they take clinical decisions on the management of virtually hospitalized patients and receive instant feedback from in a large classroom setting.
Graduate Entry Medicine Blended Learning Project
The Learning Innovation Team created a blended learning programme, designed by students, for the graduate entry medical degree, the first blended medical course of its kind in the UK.
AI for student learning and research project team
This cross-Faculty team co-created an interactive learning resource with students to help users understand academic integrity and ethics when using AI and to develop their knowledge and skills of AI as they progress through their degree.
Professional Services
The qLegal team
Awarded for excellence in employability, qLegal work with over 100 students each year provide free legal support to real clients working under the supervision of the qLegal team and external lawyers, augmenting their legal studies as they learn by doing.
The School of Economics and Finance Apprenticeship Team
Awarded because of their excellence in student employability, the team has shared learnings from their apprenticeship programme with teams across the university and worked closely with students and employers to manage the introduction of the system thus enhancing apprentices’ learner journey.
President and Principal’s Prizes
Dr Daniel Gover & Professor Phillip Cowley, School of Politics & International Relations
Daniel and Philip’s Parliamentary Studies and Placement modules focus on student employability and are taught in conjunction with the Houses of Parliament. Students can work for two days per week for an MP (or similar), nearly 200 students have and many are working in Westminster now.
Dr Michael Page, Institute of Health Sciences Education
Awarded for developing the postgraduate Clinical Education suite of programmes, the UK’s first clinical education Level 7 apprenticeship, in a highly-rated programme which has successfully widened access to this education beyond doctors.
Dr Lesley Howell & The HoloLens Team (Science and Engineering/Professional Services)
For co-creating augmented reality resources to help first year chemistry students develop necessary key skills which they can practice again and again outside the lab, building competence and confidence.
Dr Xue Zhou; Dr Joanne J Zhang; Dr Lilian Schofield; Dr Aisha Abuelmaatti; Dr Lesley Howell; Dr Natalia Efremova; Dr Fernando Barrio and Dr Darryn Mitussis
An initiative to boost AI literacy among its community, aligning with the Russell Group’s AI guidance, culminating in a self-paced AI training module tailored for the School of Business and Management, which has enhanced student employability.
