Radboud University Announces Recipients of Teaching Awards 2023
The winners of the University Teaching Awards 2023 have been announced. During the award ceremony on Wednesday morning 20 March, the senior prize went to Nanne Migchels, Assistent Professor of Marketing at the Nijmegen School of Management. The winner of the talent award is Henning Meredig, lecturer and academic staff member of the German department at the Faculty of Arts. Both received a certificate and a cash prize of € 3,000.
This annual election is part of The Education Days, this year from 18 to 21 March. Students, colleagues and faculty boards could nominate lecturers (or teams) for a nomination. The nominees had to be lecturers who have delivered a personal, excellent teaching performance at the Radboud University in the past year to improve the visibility and quality of education. The Executive Board awarded the prizes based on the advice of a jury appointed for this purpose, chaired by Rector Magnificus José Sanders. Three teachers were nominated for both awards.
Jury’s substantiation
Nanne Migchels
When it comes to the winner of the senior award, Nanne Migchels, the jury is particularly impressed by the link he makes with society. The jury report states: ‘Nanne has an impressive network of former students, they are involved in education as buddies. In doing so, he makes a connection between generations and society and thus demonstrates having a clear vision on education.’ The other two nominees for the senior award were Marijtje Jongsma (Associate Professor at the Behavioural Science Institute and Psychology at the Faculty of Social Sciences) and Martijn de Koning (Associate Professor Islam, Politics and Society at the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies).
Even during the first lecture week, I work on building a bond with and between students to create a community of students and alumni. This helps students get a better orientation to the job market.
Henning Meredig
In the case of the winner of the talent award, Henning Meredig, the jury praised his extra effort for the development of education and students in an international setting. The jury report states: ‘We wish every student such an inspiring and committed teacher.’ The two other nominees for the talent award were Juliette Alenda-Demoutiez (Assistent Professor Economic Theory and Economic Policy at the Nijmegen School of Management) and Saskia Glas (Assistant Professor Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences).
I enjoy teaching and continuous improvement. I invite students to reflect with me already during the lecture. Based on continuous student feedback, I immediately know what works and what doesn’t in my teaching.
Both winners must use two-thirds of the € 3,000 cash prize for the improvement of education; They can spend a third as they see fit. The University Teaching Awards have been awarded annually since 1996.

In addition to Rector Magnificus José Sanders, this year’s jury consisted of Jan Bransen (Radboud Teaching and Learning Centre), Vincent Hunink (Faculty of Arts), Tesseltje de Lange (Faculty of Law), Matthijs Moorkamp (Nijmegen School of Management), Stefanie Sonner (Faculty of Science), Marit Rensink (secretary, Radboud Teaching and Learning Centre) and students Anne van Poppel (Psychology), Derk Wijkamp (Philosophy, Politics & Society) and Isa Witteveen (Medicine). The jury took various elements into account in its assessment, including the extent to which the lecturer or the teaching team has contributed to innovation or improvement of education through their teaching performance.
