Rare Achondroplasia surgery done at JNMC
ALIGARH : Surgeons at the Department of Neurosurgery, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University have performed a rare surgery to correct a skeletal disorder, which has brought a new ray of hope and life in a young girl who was suffering from Achondroplasia.
Prof. Raman Mohan Sharma, Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery said that Mansi, a 16 years girl from Hathras suffered from Achondroplasia, which is a rare type of skeletal disorder occurring in approximately 1 in 25000 life birth, which hindered the girl from achieving a good height. In such cases the length of patients’ hands and legs remain short, however most of these children are born to normal height parents and live full healthy life.
Prof. Sharma said that on careful evaluation, Mansi, with a short neck, was found to have a craniovertebral junction anomaly, which is one of the rare manifestations of Achondroplasia, and her bones at the base of skull were compressing the spinal cord.
She underwent surgery in which the bones of the neck were realigned and fixed with screws and rod and now the patient is making good recovery and the surgeons are satisfied with the outcome.
He said that a 3D printing to understand the anatomy in such cases can help immensely.
Dr. Obaid Siddiqui and his team managed anesthesia.
Dr. Nilesh Chaudheri, Dr. NikhilWadwan, Anwar Ali, Lilly Dutt, Haripal, Qasim and Usman were part of the team and they played important role in the surgery.
Prof. M.F. Huda stated that doctors at JNMC are operating all advanced spine surgery cases such as scoliosis surgery, spinal deformity, craniovertebral junction surgeries and spinal tumor surgeries. Now the patients need not to go far away centers for getting treatment for such disorders.
Dr. Ahmad Ansarisaid that craniovertebral junction connects brain to spinal cord. Hence, surgery in this area is very critical. However, “we will soon be starting endoscopic spine surgeries at JNMC on regular basis.
Dr. Tabish Khan pointed out that such cases require good preoperative planning. “More than 200 cases of craniovertebral junction anomalies have been operated in the department over the last 10 years”, he added.
Prof. Veena Maheshwari, Dean, faculty of Medicine and Principal and CMS, J.N. Medical College congratulated the doctors, adding that there are two seats of M.Ch. in Neurosurgery and the department is developing into an advanced Neurosurgery centre in western Uttar Pradesh.
