Rare cardiothoracic surgery conducted at JNMC

ALIGARH  : A team of cardiothoracic surgeons at the J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, comprising Dr Mohd Azam Haseen, Dr Syed Shamayal Rabbani and Dr Ghanzanfar successfully performed a rare procedure on a young boy, Avani, a resident of Maharajganj, UP, who appeared blue since birth and was not maintaining the Oxygen level due to a complex cardiac disorder.

Avni was earlier taken to different medical colleges and hospitals in Varanasi and Lucknow. Later, the doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi diagnosed the kid with great arteries attached to opposite chambers, along with a large hole in his heart and the pathway from heart to lungs constricted.

The patient was finally brought to J.N. Medical College where Dr. Shaad Abqari, Paediatric Cardiologist and Nodal Officer, Interdepartmental Pediatric Cardiac Centre and Dr. Moaz Kidwai attended and referred him for surgery to the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

In the surgery process, the heart and lungs were stopped for 180 minutes to repair the defects and close the hole in his heart. During this period, the heart and lung functions were managed by the Clinical Perfusionist, Dr Sabir Ali Khan and Mr Irshad Qureshi, while the Anaesthesia team comprised Dr. Dipti Channa, Nida and Manish. Salman, Kamran and Aslam. Dr Abhinav, Dr Shivram, Dr Asha, Dr Nirmal, Dr Saddam, Dr Anas and Dr Abinash, along with the nursing team led by Suhail-ur Rahman and Amir Khan, helped in pre and post-operative care.

Prof Mohd Azam Haseen, Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery said it is a proud moment for JNMC and AMU to carry out this rare surgery.

Dr Shaad Abqari said that the kid had a very complex defect and only a handful of government centres in India have the capability of doing such surgeries.

Dr. Shamayal Rabbani, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery stated that double root transfer is a highly complex surgery with only 5-6 centres in India doing these kinds of surgeries and it’s a proud moment for the department to be able to do this.

In his complimentary message, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Gulrez said that life-saving surgeries are being done regularly in J.N. Medical College and more than 5000 cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries have been done at the department during the past few years.
