Indian Agronomist MS Swaminathan, Architect of Green Revolution, Passes Away at Age 98 in Chennai

MS Swaminathan, known as the ‘Father of Economic Ecology’ by the United Nations Environment Programme, breathed his last in Chennai on Wednesday due to age-related ailments. Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, he was the second son of surgeon MK Sambasivan and Parvati Thangammal from Alappuzha in Kerala. Swaminathan’s dedication to agriculture stemmed from witnessing the impact of the Bengal famine of 1943 and widespread rice shortages during World War II. His illustrious career earned him over 40 awards, including the prestigious World Food Prize in 1987 during his tenure as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute.
