Report shows agribusiness region in São Paulo sees 15.7% growth in GDP

The Brazilian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 1.9% in the first quarter of this year, driven by agribusiness. Even with a 4.22% decline in the sector’s GDP, in 2022, agro represents the largest share of the national GDP, which reached successive records in 2020 and 2021.

The scenario for the GDP of the São Paulo agribusiness region is also optimistic. According to the Seade Foundation, the growth was 15.7% between 2012 and 2022. In the last year, the sector in the State reached a surplus of US$ 20.8 billion, driven by the sugar and alcohol complex. Along with it, the sector of meat, soy, forestry products (such as cellulose and paper) and juice represents 79.8% of exports in São Paulo.

This advance was 130% higher than the state average – including all sectors –, which had an accumulated GDP growth rate of 6.7% in the period. The growth of agribusiness was almost double that of the most industrialized region of the State, 8.7%, in addition to four times greater than that of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, which was below the state average, with 3.7%.

The distribution of the dominant sectors of activity in the State is divided into three regions. The Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, which contributes 50.3% of the state’s GDP, has the services sector as its flagship: its 39 municipalities concentrate 56.4% of this segment in the State.

The surroundings of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, which includes the Administrative Regions of Campinas, São José dos Campos, Sorocaba and Baixada Santista, are responsible for 33.6% of GDP. The area holds 49.6% of the industry in São Paulo. The agribusiness region covers more than 60% of the state’s territory, controls 67.5% of its agriculture and livestock and accounts for 16% of the wealth that São Paulo produces. This large area stood out for its dynamism in the last ten years.
